Which mattress is best for two people sharing a bed?
For two sleepers, the best mattress is the one that settles your disagreements: firmness, movement, space and combined weight. Start with firmness, because it decides whether you should share one comfort layer at all.

The quick answer: Our starting recommendation for most couples is Helix, because it gives two sleepers three routes within one brand: a shared model chosen by sleep position and feel, a split king made of two Twin XL mattresses in different models, or a Dual Comfort topper with a plush half and a firm half. Its published weight guidance, 300 lb per sleeper and 600 lb combined for standard lines, makes the fit easy to check. If you want to change firmness from night to night, Saatva's Solaire adjusts each side separately in queen and larger sizes.
What matters when two people share a mattress
- Firmness agreement. If you both like the same feel, one mattress works. If not, the choice is between separate mattresses (a split king), a split topper, or an adjustable air bed.
- Movement and edges. Wrapped coils, microcoils and foam layers are how brands describe limiting motion transfer; reinforced edges affect how much of the surface you can use. Treat these as brand descriptions to check during a trial.
- Space per person. A queen is 60 inches wide, or 30 inches each; a king is 76 inches, or 38 inches each.
- Combined weight. Some brands publish limits per sleeper and for the whole bed. Add both partners' weights before you choose a line.

Where Helix fits — and where it doesn't
Choose Helix when you each want your own feel without an air system. Helix no longer sells dual-comfort mattresses; its support team recommends combining two Twin XL mattresses into a split king that fits a king frame or base, so each partner picks a model.
Choose Helix also when you agree on most things but not firmness. The Dual Comfort topper is 3 inches of memory foam with a plush side and a firm side under a GlacioTex cooling cover, in queen, king and California king. Its warranty is one year, far shorter than the mattress's.
Consider Saatva Solaire instead when you want to fine-tune firmness often. Solaire offers 50 settings on each side via a remote in queen and larger sizes; its split king versions pair only with Saatva's split adjustable bases.
Consider Purple instead when you both like a medium feel and a grid surface. The Restore Hybrid lists couples among its intended sleepers; its split king is two Restore Hybrid Twin XLs, so both halves have the same medium feel.
A worked example: two sleepers, two preferences
Illustrative couple: Partner A weighs 180 lb and sleeps on their side, preferring medium; Partner B weighs 230 lb, sleeps on their stomach and prefers firm.
- Weight check. 180 + 230 = 410 lb combined, under Helix's 600 lb standard guidance, and each partner is under 300 lb. The standard lines fit.
- Route 1, split king. Two Twin XL mattresses at 38 inches each make 76 inches, the width of a king. Partner A could take the Midnight, Helix's medium model for side sleepers; Partner B picks a firmer model.
- Route 2, shared mattress plus topper. A queen Midnight plus the Dual Comfort topper: $1,478.66 + $465.33 = $1,943.99 at regular prices. Partner B sleeps on the topper's firm half. Space is 30 inches each rather than 38.
- Decide within the trial. Helix asks for 30 nights before an exchange or return, within 120 nights.
Checklist before you decide
- Agree on feel first. If you cannot, choose a split setup rather than a compromise model.
- Add up your weights. Check both the per-sleeper and combined figures for the line you want.
- Measure the space. Count inches per person, then check the room and doorways.
- Read motion and edge claims as claims. Test them together during the trial, sitting and lying near the edge.
- Plan the base and bedding. A split king needs a king frame or base that supports two mattresses; a Solaire split king needs Saatva's split bases.
- Compare warranty terms per component. A topper's warranty can be much shorter than the mattress's.

Is a king always better for couples?
Not always, but it adds room: 38 inches per person against 30 on a queen, from 76- and 60-inch widths. Check the room first, because a king needs space around it as well.
What if we like different firmness levels?
Use a split king of two different Twin XL models, a split topper, or an adjustable air bed. The first gives each person a separate mattress; the second keeps one mattress; the third changes firmness on demand.
Does Helix still sell a dual-firmness mattress?
No. Helix says it no longer offers Dual Comfort mattresses and recommends a split king instead; it still sells the Dual Comfort topper for a single shared mattress.
